Tying and Hiding Knots
by Naysa Withem 1
Let’s focus on tying and hiding knots. During training I am often asked how do you deal with the thread tails? If you are just doing your own work or customer work it is perfectly acceptable to “pull” your knot to the center of the fabric. To do this first you have to make a knot. Many of you are familiar with the technique where you take 4 or 5 stitches in the same hole to “knot” the thread. My favorite thing to do is to sew the 4 or 5 stitches then pull up the bobbin thread leaving about 8 inches of thread for each. If you separate the threads and give a gentle tug you will feel the knot jump to the center of the quilt. You can then cut the threads. Practice this technique to be sure your threads are secure. Creative Studio has a customizable thread tie off system. You will find this under Tools/ Technical Support/Controller Definitions. Tie offs look best when they are tiny stitches in a straight row. My favorite setting is 6 stitches at 15 SPI for daily sewing and 6 stitches at 33 SPI for custom work. Be sure to save your changes before closing the Controller Definition Window.
